Topic: Avoiding IBC Pitfalls for Structural Engineers

This presentation will focus on common plan review comments that can delay permits, consume budget hours, and place strain on the relationships between structural engineers and their clients. Often cross-discipline issues are left unresolved when construction documents are submitted to the jurisdiction having authority over the project. Many of the common "pitfalls" can be easily avoided by a little bit of code knowledge and some extra communication during the design stages of a project. The goal of this presentation is to make each attendee a more valuable member of the design team by providing them with a basic IBC knowledge base including structural requirements outside of the "Structural Chapters."

Michael Abegg Biography

Michael is the Building Official for the City of Phoenix Planning & Development Department. He has a Bachelors and Masters degree in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University. He is a licensed Civil Engineer in the State of Arizona and is also a Certified Building Official through ICC. He has 10+ years experience in structural design including custom homes, commercial construction and blast design. Michael moved to Arizona in 2007 and has been with the City of Phoenix for the past 3 years. As the Building Official he works with development teams including owners, developers, architects, engineers and construction managers to develop general and project specific code solutions for everyday and unique issues. Outside of work Michael likes to spend as much time as possible with his wife and three young boys. He also teaches weekly violin lessons.
